Mil Budas y mil cascadas / Tausend Buddhas und tausend Wasserfaelle

Die Reise im schmalen Boot ueber den Mekong hatte schon sehr viel Charme: der breite braune Fluss, die Doerfer zu beiden Seiten, das dichte Gruen und abrupte Berge / Fromout Luang Prabang we visited on a day excursion by boat the caves of the thousand buddhas of Pak Ou. The journey on the narrow boat over the Mekong had already a lot of charme: the flow of the wide brown river , small villages on every side, lush vegetation and sudden mountains.

On the way we filled up our tank at this floating petrol station, another boat. The daughter of the owner of the petrol station watched seriously the action on the river

The temple of Pak Ou, or also called „cave of the thousand buddhas“, consists in reality of two caves, an upper one, whereof you see the entrance here in the picture and that leads maybe about50 metres inside of the mountain, and the lower cave, with a wide entrance next to the river. In the upper one you enter with a torch and discover groups of buddha figures along the whole cave and an enormous stupa at the end. Meanwhile in the lower one, there are more than 2000 buddha statues already, in all sizes and positions.

These are some of the sculptures of the lower cave, that have been brought piece by piece there from believers during many centuries

These sculptures towards the exit of the lower cave seem to guard the river and its life

On another day exursion we went to the beautiful waterfalls of Kuang Si. Besides the name of „land of a million elephants“ Laos could also be called the land of the thousand waterfalls. We saw many others during the rest of our trip through Laos. Also inside the park was an enclosure with blackbears and a tigress (?, female tiger is what I mean), who were saved from torture and capture of illegal animal traffic. Although the tiger caused quite a lot of pity, wandering restlessly from one side of the other, it was amazing to see this animal from so close.

When we walked up towards the big waterfall, we came across a number of each other following cascades and pools, all with this inviting turquoise colour and rainforest vegetation around. People were also bathing in some of them, although the water was terribly cold, as I could notice later when taking a bath myself. In one pool, some guys were playing Tarzan and jumping into the water hanging from a rope...

And this is the finally reached Kuang Si waterfall, that is actually much more impressive than in the picture. You can also wander up the waterfall on its right side.
