So begann unsere Reise durch Argentinien, vom suedlichsten Zipfel bis hoch in den Norden / Fromout Punta Arenas in Chile we took the bus to Ushuaia in Argentina. First we crossed the Magellanic straight on the Chilean side and entered Fireland. Then we crossed the border, to be seen here in the picture, to Argentina and started our trip across the country from its southernmost end up to the north.

A la derecha de la imagen, casi a media altura, se puede ver la ciudad y un gran barco atracado justo delante, y acaparando la zona media del encuadre se encuentra el brillante espejo del Canal Beagle, cuya calma contrasta con las tempestuosas aguas del Estrecho de Magallanes / Mit mehrmaligem Verlaufen, durch tiefen Matsch und dann immer weiter hoch erreichten wir doch noch den Gipfel vom Cerro del medio, wo wir mit diesem grandiosen Blick auf Ushuaia, die suedlichste Stadt der Welt, und den Beagle Kanal entschaedigt wurden Die ruhigen Gewaesser des Beagle Kanals bilden einen starken Kontrast zu den bewegten Gewaessern der Magellanischen Meerenge / After several times taken the wrong way, crossing through parts of deep mud and always up the mountain we finally managed to reach the top of Cerro del medio and got compensated with this amazing view on Ushuaia, the southernmost city of the world, and the quiet waters of the Beagle Channel, all the contrary to the unpredictable waters of the Magellanic straight.

The last part of the forest consisted of these magical helter skelter of lenga trees. A little bit further up stopped the vegetation and started the snow.

We walked the whole day across the park, through fairytale forests like these, even past beaver dams.

A bay on our way through the park

Also you can admire in the park this „turbal“ from near. A „turbal“ is a plant carpet, that forms itself over a long period out of mosses and liquens, that die, almost don’t discompose themselves and then new mosses and liquens grow on top of it. This way the layers get always thicker, show all kinds of colours and regulate the water level. A “turbal” can absorb a lot of water and deliver it when needed.

In the park also ends the highway RN3, the southernmost point of the Argentinian roads, and therewith also the civilization.

On the 17th of December we started our journey towards the north with the far away destination San Juan, which we wanted to reach the latest the 23rd of December for Cris’ birthday, the friend we were going to visit there, and celebrate Christmas with her and her family. But so short before Christmas, flight tickets were difficult to get, unbelievably expensive and included two or three overstops. Therefore we decided to take the bus and make a stop for a night half way in Comodoro Rivadavia. Luckily buses in Argentina are very comfortable, because the trip from Ushuaia to Comodoro lasted 24 hours and from there to Mendoza another 30 hours! Only we wouldn’t choose Comodoro again. Here in the picture you see the church of the town, that I agree with the travel guide to be the most ugliest I have ever seen. The rest of town is unfortunately not much better. The town lives a boom through oil production, there is a lot of construction going on, all hotels are fully booked for new employees of the oil companies. We almost couldn’t find a place to sleep and even the last hole was incredibly expensive. The city lies between an arid mountain chain and the sea with dirty stone beaches, from where you see big oil tankers and industrial plants. So any other stopover would have been better...

The bus from Comodoro to Mendoza left with two hours delay, which was annoying for the fact, that it should have left at 5 o’clock in the morning! But that way we walked to the seaside and lived a spectacular sunrise.

This is more or less how the Patagonian landscape looked like, that we saw from the bus, a flat desert! Of course the landscape is very different when you get nearer towards the Andes and its mountaineous and green landscape. But the main street is only connecting Ushuaia and the north along the coast of Patagonia.
