Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time for the possible trekkings of several days. Moreover accomodation of any kind is very expensive and with the rough weather we didn’t feel like camping. Therefore we did a daytour, where we were driven to several points in a small group and could discover that way the impressive nature and landscape. Between snow covered peaks of mountains we saw many lakes, glittering in all colours, the Grey glaciar and a rich fauna.

Aber hohe Windstaerken sind in den Breitengraden keine Ausnahme / Along the Greylake we walked towards a view point, from where we could see the grey glaciar on the opposite shore. There we saw icebergs the first time in our life. It is fascinating how the ice glows in blue. Pieces of ice in the most craziest shapes are blown across the lake and washed in front of us on the shore. The wind almost made us stumble. But strong winds are no exception at these latitudes.

In this film you can see how strong winds were blowing at the lago grey. The waves make it look like the sea, but it is only a lake:

Im Hintergrund schauen die umliegenden Bergketten aus den Wolken und recherhand sieht man schon die sogenannten zweifarbigen “Hoerner” / In the foreground you see the Greylake with its icebergs. In the background some of the surrounding mountain chains are peeping out of the clouds. On the right side you can already see the prominent so called “horns” in their two colors.

We had a picnic on the shore of the Pehoe-Lake and savoured the incredible view. The mountains with the horns lay right in front of us. The peeks of the horns seem to have been painted in black, caused by different rock layers. Many birds kept us company of course speculating to share our picnic...

Here we stand even closer to the „horns“. Part of the dense vegetation are little moss bushes, that make a very soft impression, but actually prick a lot. They are called “cushion for the mother-in-law”...

Ganze Familien sprangen an uns vorbei / One of the many Guanakos, that live in the park. Entire Guanako families sprang across our path.

With the bus we travelled further south through flat steppe to Punta Arenas, Chile’s southest town, past extensive „estancias“ with names like „Quien sabe“ (who knows) or „Rincon amigo“ (the friendly corner).

Dort erfuhren wir von seinem blog, wo er jeden Tag eine neue witzige Zeichnung veroeffentlicht / Big parts of Punta Arenas have this slightly dilapidated run down charme. The last daylight, in summer around eleven in the evening, fits perfectly. But the centre of town surprised us with some majestic palaces and elegant historic appartment houses. We lived for a good price and very convenient in a holiday cottage in the flowery garden of Sra Carlina, who raved about her flamenco lessons... In a cafe in town we laughed a lot with the illustrations of Alberto Montt, decorating the walls. There we got to know, that he publishes every day a new one on his blog.

Diese Art wird ungefaehr 50 cm gross / Unfortunately we couldn’t visit the Magdalena island on our day in Punta Arenas as the sea was too rough. On that island you can walk in the middle of 240.000 pinguins! But we made an excursion to the penguin colony at the Seno Otway instead, which you can reach by land. There live around 2000 Magallanic penguins from september to march, during which time the young penguins leave their eggs and grow up there. The rest of the time, the penguins live in the sea. Fromout roped off paths you can watch them from close. This species is around 50 cm big.

It was so cute to observe the penguins, how they walk in their funny way in a line through the grasses, how the youngsters peep out of their holes inmidst of bushes and grass. The beach was very busy, where the youngsters with gray feathers lie on the sand and others going in and out of the water. We couldn’t get enough of watching how the young ones are still learning to hop on land and mostly tumble on the beach.

In this film, you will be able to watch the cute way, how the penguins come out of the water and the youngsters still have to learn it:

Here a second short film about the funny way of walking of the penguins:

On the ferry to Tierra del Fuego I wondered to see a german camper! The owner explained me, that it took them one month on the boat with it from Hamburg to Buenos Aires. Now they will travel for a year through Chile and Argentina.

Many more nice pictures in the webalbum:

From the lake district we travelled farer south to Puerto Montt, where we stayed at the home of Andrea, a friend of Maria Jose and her mother, and her French boy friend Nicolas. Both of them are really hospitality in person, as they welcomed us without knowing us and on top just moved in a week ago. We had the feeling, to know them already since a long time and felt at the same vibe. Andrea is also a enthousiastic traveller. The delicious meal we were eating is called Mariscal and includes a lot of different seafood, whereof Puerto Montt has so much to offer.

The island has its own culture, own architecture, folk tales and superstitions. There you will still find witches and magicians. The tough climate with almost always a dark sky is compensated by colorfully painted houses and boats.

This is the church San Francisco of the year 1906 in Castro, the capital of Chiloe. Its inner decoration completely out of wood is especially beautiful. I found the outer covering very curious, being out of tin, pressed into diverse patterns. Both the inner and outer decoration you will see later in the web album. Ricardo was a little bit disappointed, when he saw the church after 15 years again, as he remembered it in much brighter colors. Surely they will paint it soon again in bright lilac and yellow. The churches of Chiloe are one of the main attractions of the island, as every village’s church has a different structure and color. In the year 2000 the Unesco has declared 14 of them as World cultural heritage. In the web album we show some further examples of churches in Chiloe.

An example for Chiloes colorful houses, whereof many are also built on pillars next to the water. We actually strolled through this quite poor and deserted quarter of Castro in the early evening hours and wondered sometimes if this would be the safest place to walk with our cameras around the neck and the laptop in the backpack...

The eastern coast of the island that faces the Pacific is almost deserted. The islanders live on the West coast or on small islands between the West coast and the continent. In Dalcahue on Chiloe, north of Castro, we took the ferry for the island Quimchao and travelled to the small village Curaco de Velez. There we looked for a place to eat oysters and found this simple but nice open air bar called “Los troncos”, where the owner served us some he just collected. They were absolutely delicious!

In one of the small restaurants at the market of Ancud we tried the famous specialty of Chiloe „Curanto“. It consists of a heap of mussels and a giant species of mussels called “cholgas”. While the male cholgas still have an attractive orange color, its female companions are black. The black ones didn’t attract me at all. Part of the whole is a bit of sausage and smoked pork decorated with “chapalele”, a mixture of potato mash and flour. Besides this you get served a cup of stock with a taste of smoked meat and a cup of stock of onion, coriander and lemon. We wanted to try it, but unfortunately we didn’t become big fans...

To get to the Chilenian Patagonia, we decided to go by boat and stepped the 4th of December on the Navimag ferry, that took us in four days and three nights to Puerto Natales. We actually left almost a whole day later, as the ferry had so much delay. But as I returned from Chiloe with a stomach problem, I was quite happy about some extra time on firm ground in Puerto Montt to relax.

Here we left Puerto Montt behind with its colourful quarter of Angelmo and headed south. The ferry went past the island of Chiloe, the Golfo de Corcovado, the Canal Moraleda, over the open sea, then across the Golfo de Penas, along the Canal Messier, a stop at Puerto Eden and glacier Pio XI, the last part through canals along sounds until we reached Puerto Natales. We spent a lot of time watching the landscape, reading, watching movies or drinking pisco sours... Except the day we crossed the open sea and the Golfo de Penas with high waves, it was an enjoyable and smooth journey.

On the third day we reached in early morning the small only fromout the water reachable village Puerto Eden, where still live some Kawesqar, an Indian tribe who originates from this area. The Kawesqar have been discovered in 1930 and from their original habits is known, that they used to pass the main part of their life in canoos. A whole family shared a canoo, where they cooked, the children grew up and from where they fished. They dived with few clothes into the icecold water to catch seafood. Today the ferry always stops there to ask the people if they need anything. They can also travel for free with the ferry. About 20 of the 200 inhabitants came on board. Because of the delay we unfortunately didn’t have time to go ourselves on land and discover the village.

Here we are as near as we could get to the front of the glacier Pio XI, as 70% of the glacier are under water. This glacier is the biggest in South America, with a ninety meter high front and a width of five kilometers.

Hinter uns sieht man den Gletscher Pio XI wieder / This is how we wrapped ourselves in against the icy wind. Behind us can be seen the glacier Pio XI again.

The last days the weather was quite cloudy and misty. But this also enhanced the mystic atmosphere of the fjords.

Y por supuesto, algunas fotos mas en este link al webalbum / Wieder mal ein paar mehr Fotos in diesem Webalbum / Again a few more pictures in this webalbum.

Although our travels ended the 31st of May, the blog will continue for much longer, as we will tell you about our last six months of travel fromout home...

We returned with two extra suitcases!

“Time flies like an arrow.

“Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.”

....................................................................................

After a whole year our travels conclude now, but a dream has come true. It’s quite strange to be at home now redressing our former life out of million of boxes. Unpacking our backpacks full of small souvenirs smells, sounds and images of a year keep flashing by. Time has passed so quickly, in the words of Groucho Marx:

“Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.”

But all the nice memories will always accompany us. The trip was absolutely worth the effort. Looking back at our experience, we would still pick the same route. Of course there are many places, that we also would have loved to visit and everywhere we would have liked to stay longer. But we also wouldn’t like to leave any destination out, if we would be starting now. Fortunately nothing bad happened like getting robbed, loose luggage or serious illnesses. We were really lucky. This is the satisfied conclusion.

We are also glad to return to Barcelona. So we can only agree with the following words of Don Quijote about Barcelona:

"Barcelona, archive of courtesy, home of foreigners, hospital of the poor, home country of the brave, vengeance of the offended and grateful correspondence of strong friendships, unique in its situation and beauty.”
(Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quijote – part II, 72nd chapter)

But also our travels were only possible, as so many helped us in our adventure. The people we visited, met, got to know or crossed our path made a big part of the fun of the trip. We saw many wonderful places, but without these people it wouldn’t have been the same. Here follows the long list of all the people, we thank very much:

- Our families: my mother and Inge, Miguel and Sofia, who have supported us in our plans,
- All our blog readers, who have not abandoned us, although we are so far behind schedule. Although the blog is a lot of work, it was big fun, to share our adventures with you that way. Many thanks to all, that wrote comments. But please keep reading, because there is still missing the second half of our travels, that we will tell until the end.

All that have received us so generously at their home and made our stay in that place very special:

- Cristina and her mother Cristina in San Juan in Argentina,
- Isabelle, Theo and Ricardo in Cordoba,
- Olga and Roland in Colonia Independencia in Paraguay
- Gabi, Jimena, Cecilia and Esteban in Quito,
- Ricardo’s parents Miguel and Sofia in Bogota,
- Mariana, Pablo and Natalia in Mexico DF,
- Alfredo in Puerto Rico,
- Ricardo’s sister Alexandra, Mauricio and Mateo in Los Angeles, also Emilio who has just come to this world this week,
- Ricardo’s brother Juan Carlos, Liliana, Sebastian and Clarissa, who we got to know recently born, in Vancouver and
- Tyler and Sarah in Seattle.

To all travelers that we got to know on our way and all that have helped us during our trip:
- The whole family of Ashok Parwanda and his sons Gaurav and Varun in Delhi, who received us the first day of our travels and invited us later to a family party, that was very special,
- Sarah and Tylor, who we got to know in the first week of our trip in the North of India and who recommended us many great places, where they had already passed on their trip and we still had ahead. Funny is, that we met them now again in our last week of travel in their hometown Seattle,
- Kazi, who led us safely through the heights of the Himalaya in our trekking around Leh and who managed to create a big variety of XXdishes on only one camping cooker,
- Albert and Gladys, not only for their excellent ayurvedic massage course, but also the evenings spent together at their home in Mamallapuram,
- Ashok, the best driver, who took us to the most beautiful places in Rajasthan in the north of India,
- Bruno, Jordi, Vanessa and Jose Luis, friends from Barcelona, who we met in Tokyo and who brought us lots of stuff,
- My mother and her friend Gudrun, who travelled until Vietnam to meet with us, for the nice days together there and invitations and especially for the big heap of things that they brought us and others she took home,
- Francis, who we met in Halong Bay in Vietnam, for all the XXrecommendations for New Zealand, his home country, where we also met him again,
- La, our trekking guide of the Elephant camp near Luang Prabang in Laos,
The owner of our hotel in Pakse, who invited us to his birthday party,
- Robyn, for the night in the hotel in Sydney and all recommendations,
- Vicki and Simon in Sydney for all recommendations and Vicki for the private tour to the most beautiful hidden parts of town,
- Martita and her family near Santiago for the relaxing day in the country side,
- The whole family and friends of Cristina in San Juan, especially Vicki and Mauricio, her brother and sister, with whom we celebrated Christmas and the fantastic days at the finca, also Cristobal, where ever he might be, we keep him in our memory,
- All friends of Isabelle in Cordoba, as for example Hugo and Adriana, Bubu, Marcelo, and all the others, who we spent a wonderful New Years eve barbeque together,
- In Buenos Aires: Juan, Maria and Pedro, Gabi and Matias for the delicious asado barbecue evening at their house,
- Isabelle and Ricardo, for travelling with us through the amazing Northeast of Argentina,
- Maria Jose and Domingo, for meeting with us in San Pedro de Atacama and celebrate my birthday together, many thanks for taking home all the films and diaries,
- In Bogota: the whole family of Ricardo, his grandmother, all uncles, aunts and cousins, who organized great opportunities to come together, we will miss Ricardos cousin Laura very much, Lilianas and Mauricios parents for inviting us, Monica, that I could participate at an Arabian dance lesson, all the friends for the nice evenings spent together: Alfonso, Ruth, Ramirez, Juanita, Guido, Diana, Gustavo, Cristina, Mabel, Monica, Coco and Giovani,
- In Puerto Rico: Luis Rafael Sanchez for the wonderful excursion, where we got to know the Northeast of the island, Eddie for picking us up at the airport and all the help at our arrival,

To all that gave us travel recommendations: Abel and Birgitta for all recommendations after their experience of a round the world tour, Inga for Tamil Nadu, Laura for India, Inge for Laos and Cambodia, Tomoko for Tokyo, Sandra for Mexico, Nadine for Los Angeles and San Francisco and Alan Silver for the ideas for San Francisco,

- Toni of the Iberia office in Barcelona, who always helped us quickly with any issue concerning our Round-the-world-ticket,
- Esteban of the Caixa-Bank, who helped us a lot,
- Tomoko and David for their help, to open the blog and Hector for his help with the heading of the blog,

To all those persons, that have shared moments with us during the trip, that we could not enumerate, locals and other travelers, whether sitting with us next to the river, in the train, the ship, the bus, all those locals that gave us many warm smiles, a welcoming look, nice gestures, good recommendations at the hotels, which were all part of what made this journey such a profound, human, unique experience full of nice surprises.

And last but not less important, just for chronological reasons, to all the friends who were waiting for us at the airport, what a great surprise and the best welcome present!

Chi Chi Chi! Le Le Le! Chile Chile!

In Santiago we first walked to the „Plaza de Armas“, the absolute centre of the city, and visited the cathedral, whose tower is reflected here in this building. Very impressive was to observe, how many and also young people are praying fervently in the church. Such dedication is something rare to be seen in Europe already. But from then on we met this picture all around Latin America. As in Santiago we were more busy with organizing our further trip and relax a bit from the intensive travelling through New Zealand and everything before, we didn’t visit many monuments or museums.

All to the left sits Marta, who spoiled us very much during our stay at her home and with whom we passed whole evenings of animated conversation. Next to her sit two of her four daughters, that just came by for a visit, to the left Piti and to the right Marta.

Von denen koennt ihr viele mehr im Welbalbum sehen / One day we made an excursion to the city Valparaiso, about an hour from Santiago. The city winds up and down over many hills, from where you have an excellent view on the Pacific and the big freight ships waiting in the harbour. Here in the picture you can see one of the “ascensores”, literally translated the “elevators”, with which you can easily switch between one of the hills and downtown at the bottom of the hills next to the sea. Besides its special geographical situation, the city is also fascinating because of its nice and colourful houses in many quarters up on the hills. You can see many more pictures of these in the webalbum.

We passed a perfect day surrounded by the big family of Marta and Marcelo in a suburb of Santiago, although it felt like being far in the countryside. Next to Marta and Marta sit from left to right Amanda, Jose Antonio and Manuel. The only ones missing are Angeles and Valentina. One accident happened: Ricardo played football with the boys and once hit the ball with so much energy that it fell right on a shelf full of stucco figures and destroyed three Christ figures at once...

So kamen wir in den Genuss von Eisbein mit Sauerkraut, Apfelstrudel und alle moeglichen Kuchen, die hier auch auf dem spanischen Menue „Kuchen“ heissen / Five days after our arrival in Santiago we continued our journey southwards to the pictoresqueXX village Frutillar, in a hotel right next to the lake Llanquihue with view on the volcano Osorno as here in the picture. It was also funny to discover the traces of the German colonistsXX, who started to live in Frutillar around 1870. Many buildings in German style are still existent today, on the fire carXX is written its German translation “Feuerwehr”, a street with the name “Musikstrasse” and its German past is touristically exploted. That way we enjoyed some typical German plates of meat and cakes, that I don’t know how to translate, but tasted very much like at home.

The following day we made an excursion to Petrohue to the lake „Lago de Todos los Santos“. After lunch at Villa Kuschel, again a German name, we made a boat tour together with another group around the lake to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the surrounding mountains and volcanos like this one.

Another stop on the way back to Frutillar was to see the cascades of Petrohue. The river thunders down in hundreds of different cascades with incredible force like the one in the picture. But what also makes them so beautiful is the colour of the water from turquoise to blue, that you will see in photos in the webalbum.

Detras de nosotros se puede apreciar el color y la fuerza del agua de los saltos de Petrohue / Hinter uns sieht man einen kleinen Ausschnitt der Wassermassen in Petrohue / Behind us you can see a small extract of the water masses in Petrohue.

Many more nice photos you can see as always in the webalbum, by clicking on the icon here below:

On our way towards north we wanted to avoid Auckland and have a look at the famous Karekare Beach. After driving along the scenic drive with many curves through reforested rainforest we got to this beach, where the famous scene with the piano on the beach of Jane Campions movie „The Piano“ was shot. But besides this aspect, this lonely beach with its sand gleaming in blue and black, framed by impressive cliffs and this postcard like rock in the sea is just too beautiful. We haven’t met many people and watched fascinated the furious sea breaking on the beach and the beautiful landscape around us.

Down to the next beach we reached the village of Piha, with its popular surfing beach divided by this big rock and with many nice second homes.

To discover the northest part of the North Island, we stayed at the North Wind Lodge, the most northern hostel of the BBH alliance, with whose brochure we booked all hostels in New Zealand; the Lodge as well as the BBH brochure are very recommendable. On the first morning we walked with the first sunrays of the day to the near beach, hoping to watch dolphins and maybe even orcas. Although we didn’t see any of these animals, we were delighted by the beautiful pink coloured beach of corall splits and its pictoresque rocks and trees in the warm morning light, that we had on top all for ourselves.

Here we stand at the light house of Cape Reinga, the northest point of New Zealand and admire the marvellous beaches all around there, as this one for example.

Not far from Cape Reinga you will find this beach with the funny name Tapotupotu, where we stopped for a picnic. Only a shame, that the water was still way too cold to take a bath in the sea.

At the end of the Ninety Miles Beach the giant sand dunes of Te Paki build up. There we intended to finally also feel some adrenaline and slide down the dunes. We could have done that as well on a body board with head first, but then weren’t up to swallowing so much sand. That was the only activity that came at least a little bit near to an extreme activity, whereof New Zealand has so much to offer... In any case, we had a lot of fun!

We stayed a few days in the Bay of Islands in the city of Paihia. In the bay at Paihia there are a whole bunch of small pittoresque islands with such complicated but similar names as Moturua, Moturoa, Motuarohia. On a long tour through the bay we reached this island Motukokaku with its rock in the hole. At this day the sea was a bit too rough to pass the hole with the boat.

Right next to Paihia we visited the place, where in 1840 the treaty of Waitangi was signed by 43 tribal chiefs and during the year by five hundred in total. This treaty says, that the Maori as well as the immigrants have the right to live in New Zealand. Moreover the treaty signifies the independence of New Zealand, although under the protection of the British crown. On the treaty grounds can be visited today several historic buildings, a Maori canoe, nice gardens and a newly created meeting house (in the photo), that brings together different styles of Maori sculpture and art from all over New Zealand.

Our next and last stop after the Bay of Islands was Auckland. On the way to Auckland we had a picnic at this viewpoint after passing the villages Opononi and Omapere. The view on the ocean on one side and an inner bay with sand dunes on the other side was marvelous.

The last stop before Auckland was to visit the Kauri forest. We absolutely wanted to see these big old trees, whereof there are still many left in this protected forest north of Auckland. They are really impressive. It’s just a bit difficult to portray how huge they are in a photo. Here we sit in front of the Tane Mahuta tree, the biggest Kauri tree with a height of 51 meters. This tree is between 1200 and 2000 years old.

An einer Flanke des Vulkans grasen sogar Kuehe / In Auckland we lived in the pleasant part of Mount Eden. The name has its origin of the former volcano of the same name, on which we stand here in the picture and look at the skyline of Auckland straight ahead.
