On our way towards north we wanted to avoid Auckland and have a look at the famous Karekare Beach. After driving along the scenic drive with many curves through reforested rainforest we got to this beach, where the famous scene with the piano on the beach of Jane Campions movie „The Piano“ was shot. But besides this aspect, this lonely beach with its sand gleaming in blue and black, framed by impressive cliffs and this postcard like rock in the sea is just too beautiful. We haven’t met many people and watched fascinated the furious sea breaking on the beach and the beautiful landscape around us.

Down to the next beach we reached the village of Piha, with its popular surfing beach divided by this big rock and with many nice second homes.

To discover the northest part of the North Island, we stayed at the North Wind Lodge, the most northern hostel of the BBH alliance, with whose brochure we booked all hostels in New Zealand; the Lodge as well as the BBH brochure are very recommendable. On the first morning we walked with the first sunrays of the day to the near beach, hoping to watch dolphins and maybe even orcas. Although we didn’t see any of these animals, we were delighted by the beautiful pink coloured beach of corall splits and its pictoresque rocks and trees in the warm morning light, that we had on top all for ourselves.

Here we stand at the light house of Cape Reinga, the northest point of New Zealand and admire the marvellous beaches all around there, as this one for example.

Not far from Cape Reinga you will find this beach with the funny name Tapotupotu, where we stopped for a picnic. Only a shame, that the water was still way too cold to take a bath in the sea.

At the end of the Ninety Miles Beach the giant sand dunes of Te Paki build up. There we intended to finally also feel some adrenaline and slide down the dunes. We could have done that as well on a body board with head first, but then weren’t up to swallowing so much sand. That was the only activity that came at least a little bit near to an extreme activity, whereof New Zealand has so much to offer... In any case, we had a lot of fun!

We stayed a few days in the Bay of Islands in the city of Paihia. In the bay at Paihia there are a whole bunch of small pittoresque islands with such complicated but similar names as Moturua, Moturoa, Motuarohia. On a long tour through the bay we reached this island Motukokaku with its rock in the hole. At this day the sea was a bit too rough to pass the hole with the boat.

Right next to Paihia we visited the place, where in 1840 the treaty of Waitangi was signed by 43 tribal chiefs and during the year by five hundred in total. This treaty says, that the Maori as well as the immigrants have the right to live in New Zealand. Moreover the treaty signifies the independence of New Zealand, although under the protection of the British crown. On the treaty grounds can be visited today several historic buildings, a Maori canoe, nice gardens and a newly created meeting house (in the photo), that brings together different styles of Maori sculpture and art from all over New Zealand.

Our next and last stop after the Bay of Islands was Auckland. On the way to Auckland we had a picnic at this viewpoint after passing the villages Opononi and Omapere. The view on the ocean on one side and an inner bay with sand dunes on the other side was marvelous.

The last stop before Auckland was to visit the Kauri forest. We absolutely wanted to see these big old trees, whereof there are still many left in this protected forest north of Auckland. They are really impressive. It’s just a bit difficult to portray how huge they are in a photo. Here we sit in front of the Tane Mahuta tree, the biggest Kauri tree with a height of 51 meters. This tree is between 1200 and 2000 years old.

An einer Flanke des Vulkans grasen sogar Kuehe / In Auckland we lived in the pleasant part of Mount Eden. The name has its origin of the former volcano of the same name, on which we stand here in the picture and look at the skyline of Auckland straight ahead.

The view on the bay of Plimmerton from our room in the wonderful Moana Lodge. We didn’t see much of Wellington, only the Te Papa Nationalmuseum, after we arrived there with the ferry from the South island. To avoid the big city, we choose a hostel north of Wellington and can only recommend it to all.

Here we are still right at the beginning of the Tongariro Crossing, an approximately eight hours walk over several volcanoes in the middle of the North Island. This track was another highlight of the New Zealand trip. First we were afraid, that we would not be able to do it, as the visitor centre in Wakapapa told us the day before that there would be too much wind and clouds. But our hotel didn’t consider it too much of a problem and sent us. At some parts the wind was really close to getting dangerous and sometimes the clouds covered it all. But at every viewpoint we always had moments without clouds, except for the volcano Mount Ngauruhoe, which was always covered. The walk was really fantastic! This landscape formed by volcanoes is just amazing and its vegetation and the color of the rocks changes all the time.

Here we stand at the edge of the red crater and watch its fascinating colors, when the wind blows off the cap of the camera lens roling right down the dephts of the volcano to never be seen again. We were still annoyed about that, when the brand new rain protection of the camera did also follow the cap!

Hier erwischten wir einen Moment ohne Wolken, als wir alle drei auf einmal sehen konnten / One of the most beautiful views of the walk is this one on the three Emerald Lakes. Here we caught one moment without clouds, when we could see all three at once.

See, groesster See Neuseelands / Here we are already walking down on the other side, through a totally different landscape, after having walked through snow, now through grasses in different colors and with view on lakes. The lake in the back is even Lake Taupo, the biggest lake of New Zealand.

Take care of Kiwis!“ This on the ground living bird only exists in New Zealand and is the reason why New Zealanders are also called „Kiwis“. But unfortunately there are only very few left and we didn’t see any in its habitat.

In Rotorua, a bit further north, we are in the middle of volcanoes, geysers and bubbling mud holes. In Wai-o-Tapu, the thermal wonderland, you can admire the whole range of it within steam smelling of rotten eggs, from black mud holes like these up to fumaroles, that color the rocks and water orange, green or yellow. In one of these holes a bird species leaves their eggs, so that they get incubated by the hot earth without anymore effort.

This part is called the artists pallet, as the water takes all kinds of colors. There it explains that the color orange is caused by antimony oxide, green by colloidal sulphur, yellow by ferrous iron and dark grey by sulphurous mud.

This „Champagnerpool“ called basin occupies a 700 year old explosion crater formed by a hydro-thermal eruption. Water enters the pool through a deep conduit at a temperature of about 230 degrees Celsius and cools within the pool to about 74 degrees. The orange-colored edge contains arsenic and antimony sulphur compounds rich in minerals including gold and silver! To look at the pool with its glooming orange edge in contrast to the greenish water and the steam above it was magic.

In this video we are standing next to a part called „frying pan“. You may not hear the sound of the frying pan very clearly, but you can see how it bubbles and boils everywhere :

This way the Lady Knox Geyser exhales smoke before its eruption. Every morning you can attend live its eruption. They can program the moment of the eruption, because it’s a provoked by pouring some washing powder in the geyser, that changes the tension of the water surface and causes the eruption.

In this video the geysir starts to erupt. The water rises up to maximum fifteen meters in the air and goes on at three meters for a long while.:

We observed fascinated for a long time the bubbling mud pools.

In this video you can see how the gases come out unpredictably at always different places and sometimes causing bigger eruptions. This could be how hell looks like?:

And of course there are much more favourite pictures, that we don’t want you to miss and that you will find in the webalbum.

Hier haelt Ricardo die erste Flasche in der Hand, die in unsere Taschen wanderte, einen Chardonnay von Nautilus / After our adventures on the sea, something even more exciting was still waiting for us. Renwick near Blenheim in the North of the South Island is one of the famous winery region of New Zealand. Here in the Marlborough Sounds they grow mainly white wine since the middle of the 70ies and are especially famous for the Sauvignon Blanc and for Pinot Noir at the red wines. We absolutely wanted to visit one wine region to try local wines. Here in Renwick it is very good organized: you can easily rent a bike with bags for the wines. That way we cycled with every visit a bit happier from one winery to the other and bit by bit filled our bags. The wines tasted fantastic and the wineries let you generously try all their wines. Here Ricardo holds our first bottle of wine, a Chardonnay from Nautilus.

The area is absolutely beautiful. This was the view from the restaurant Veranda, where we had lunch. Do you know why in vineyards they usually grow a rose plant next to the wine plants? The reason is that the rose plant gets attacked first by parasites and is an indicator for the wine grower about the menaces for the grapes.

We met Francis in Vietnam in the Halong Bay many months before and met him then in his hometown Nelson again. There we had a nice evening together at his favorite pub „The Smugglers“. Already in Vietnam he gave us many valuable travel recommendations for New Zealand. But he doesn’t only know his country very well. He also travelled extensively through the rest of the world. Thanks again Francis for your recommendations, which made our trip to New Zealand even more special!

Fromout Nelson we made a day excursion to the famous Abel Tasman National Park. As we didn’t have that much time, to walk several days in a row, we wanted to pick out a very nice part of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track and walk only this part. With this water taxi we went from the village of Marahau to Tonga Beach, from where we walked four and a half hours until Torrent Bay, where another water taxi picked us up and brang us back to Marahau.

The Abel Tasman National Park is known for its marvelous coastal landscape, where the sea forms small bays, long stretches of beaches and the coastal line alternates up and down forming big cliffs. The track leads you along great lookouts, beaches and through a lush vegetation, with all sorts of ferns. Many also visit the park in Kayak. A few months later it would have been totally summer and you can lay on any of the many beaches and swim in the water.

Auf der Nordinsel kamen wir in Wellington an / Here our ferry reaches Picton, from where we crossed together with the car from the South to the North Island arriving at Wellington. Near Picton the boat journey goes first through the beautiful Marlborough Sounds before entering the open sea, that reminded me a lot of the archipel near Stockholm when crossing to Helsinki.

On the way from Franz Josef to Kaikoura on the East coast northwards of the South island we stopped as well at Maruia Springs, a thermal resort, which you can see here in the picture. There I took my first thermal bath. They had different pools built with rocks in the open at different water temperatures and a “ofuro”, a Japanese bath. The green water didn’t smell very nice and the rocks were a little bit slippery because of the algues. But we got used to that and savoured the warm water and the great view on the surrounding mountains. It was great to relax a bit on the long way!

On the following day we went on a whale watching tour, wherefore Kaikoura is famous. Near Kaikoura in the sea is to be found a deep ditch of 1,6km, that attracts all kinds of swimming animals, and one of them are the sperm whales. In Kaikoura you can find the young males, that don´t think yet about reproducing, which means the less than 40 years old males. A sperm whale measures up to 20 meters and is the biggest whale with teeth, whereof each tooth grows 25 cm long and weighs a kilo! They feed mainly on octopus, also the giant squid. The famous battle between a sperm whale and a giant squid was also described by Jules Verne in his book “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”. Moreover this species of whale is the animal with the heaviest brain. Here in the picture you can see a crew member, that listens with this instrument for whales.

The whales dive forty minutes before they return to the surface to breathe air. They take maybe ten times breath and then dive again as you can see here in the video, where you can also sea the whole tail. The whale watchers identify each whale by their tail, that are all different and like their “digital fingerprint”.:

On the south end of the beach in Kaikoura you can often watch sea lions as this one. We observed severals between the rocks. Sometimes they even come up to the parking lot between the cars, when the tide comes in very high and then you have to take care not to get too near them. Because they can bite strongly, when feeling menaced.

Das war ein weiterer unvergesslicher Hoehepunkt unseres Neuseelandaufenthalts / With wet suit and the whole equipment we stepped on the boat in Kaikoura with the idea of swimming with dolphins, what many people had already recommended to us. In the waters around Kaikoura live several groups of Dusky Dolphins, the ones we were looking for. On the boat were swimmers like me and spectators like Ricardo. The first step consisted of finding a group of dolphins. They are absolutely wild and therefore unpredictable. After we were lucky to find a group, the swimmers entered the cold water. Snorkeling we had to make the craziest sounds and movements we could think of, in order to entertain the dolphins. They get curious and approach us. We tried to make eye contact, to spin around ourselves so that they might circle around us. Some came alone, some in groups of two or three. The whole group had maybe 200 animals in total. It was an incredible feeling to watch these magic animals from so close. They are almost as big as oneself and amazingly fast. You should not try to touch them, to avoid scaring them away. Apparently we entertained them very good, because they stayed a long time around us. Ricardo and the other spectators could admire all the pirouettes that the dolphins make all the time and were especially amused by our efforts to “entertain”. This was another unforgettable highlight of our New Zealand visit.

A los delfines les encanta nadar junto a la proa del bote / Dieser Delphin schwomm lange genau vor unserem Boot, was ihnen grossen Spass zu bereiten scheint / This dolphin swam for a long while in front of our boat, which seems to be a big fun for them:

Here you can see life, why the Dusky dolphins are called the acrobats of the sea. They do these pirouettes in their free time, in order to impress other dolphins. This is their time of the day of socializing. Moreover they are very sexually active. They have sex about eight times per day and with always different partners. So they don’t seem to lack energy...:

In this video you can see very good, how the dolphins swam around us. The pirouettes they did not too close to us, as they don’t want to hurt their entertainers...:

In this last video you can easily get jealous about how relaxed and elegant the sea lion enjoys swimming in front of our boat:

Rilke on the rocks!

On the way from Wanaka to Franz Josef we stopped at this beautiful beach on the west coast, where Ricardo made little stones dancing on the sea.

Caminando hacia la pared frontal del glaciar Franz Josef, habia rojizas piedras de origen volcanico adornadas por liquen / Auf dem Weg zum Franz Josef Gletscher, den man im Hintergrund erblickt, gefielen uns besonders die Felsen in allen moeglichen Farben / On the way to the Franz Josef glaciar, which you can see in the background, we especially liked the rocks in all colours.

As in the Milford Track we finally didn’t take a helicopter, we remained with the desire to try it. As in New Zealand they offer quite often flights in helicopter and it’s expensive but affordable, we wanted to profit from the occasion and fly over the glaciers and mountains there. The only inconvenience is, that you totally depend on the weather and need the mountains without any clouds. We waited two days until we had some clear sky. As the weather in the mountains changes so quick, every two hours we looked at the mountains and the sky. Finally in the early morning of the last day, when we really had to travel on, the weather was fine and we took off together with the pilot and two other couples. Gently it rises in the sky, a great feeling. First we flew up the Franz Josef glacier and then reached the snowcapped mountains behind it. In this video we are flying near the top of Mount Tasman.:

First we saw the valley on the other side of the mountains and at the end of the valley we could even see Lake Tekapo, the lake where we stayed all at the beginning. Then appears Mount Cook in the frame, the highest mountain of New Zealand. There the wind made the helicopter shake a bit...:

The helicopter landed on the neve of Fox Glacier, the snow field on top of the glacier, from where we saw virgin snow in all directions.

We took off from the snowfield and flew over the whole glacier Fox. On that part of the trip I sat beside the pilot and had a fantastic view.:

The beautiful formations out of snow and ice at the glacier beginning.

A strong wind is blowing all the time, especially in the southern part of the South island. This wind is also called the „roaring forties“, because New Zealand is situated on the 40th degree of latitude, where already icy winds are blowing and with no obstacle for the winds before reaching New Zealand.

But when we went there, it was absolutely low season. There we stayed for one night in a curious hostel: Dustez Backpackers, whereof you will see more pictures in the webalbum. Very nice of the owners was, that they offered us four freshly laid eggs of their farm.

Aber es war genauso spannend das aufgewuehlte Meer zu beobachten / Although we didn’t see any Hector Dolphins in Porpoise Bay, it was equally amazing to observe the rough sea.

That was the terrific view from the Hilltop Backpackers in Papatowai, our favorite hostel. It consists of two old renovated houses with several rooms each, nicely furnished, that we had only for us. We right away stayed a night longer and savoured every morning this view in the sun on the terrace, watched the sheep and often also some minirabbits.

The visit of the Cathedral Caves is a popular tourist attraction. This is one of the two majestic exits of the cave.

In diesem Video sieht man wie der Wind ueber den Strand vor der Katedralhoehle fegte und der Sand immer neue Formen bildete / In the video you can see how the wind blew over the beach next to the Cathedral Cave and the sand ran in different formations:

Aqui las ovejas mandan! / Hier haben die Schafe das sagen! / Here the sheep rule!

Here we stand in front of the light tower at Nugget Point, high up on the cliffs on a peninsula totally in the Southeast of the country that one reaches over a narrow path with the abyss on both sides. Behind us you can see the “nuggets” in the sea. The view is incredible with high cliffs as far as the eye can see.

See hatten / On the way from the Southeast to the northern Westcoast we stayed a night in Wanaka, that is situated on the shores of this beautiful lake of the same name. We did a small walk from where we hat this great view on the lake.
